LiDAR - Beacons of the Past - Hillforts in the Chilterns Landscape - Events

A round up of upcoming events below:

Scrub bashing – Waulud’s Bank, 16th March, 10 - 3

We will be returning to Waulud’s Bank, Luton, on Monday 16th March for the last scrub bash of the year. Some fantastic progress was made on the two sessions already held there, with parts of this Neolithic earthwork that had been hidden for years coming to light again. As always, sturdy footwear and clothes for battling through brambles advised (and eye protection if you have it), along with layers, waterproofs, water, and packed lunch. Tools and gloves provided. LiDAR Ground Truthing Session – Greenfield Copse, 16th March, 9.30 - 3

Also on Monday 16th March we will be holding an Archaeological LiDAR Field-Checking day at the National Trust owned woodland of Greenfield Copse, near Christmas Common, Oxfordshire. Having been using the LiDAR survey to detect archaeological earthworks across the Chilterns (, we are now starting to get out into the landscape to visit identified sites, so that we can add to their description, interpretation, and understand their condition.

Places will be limited, as existing volunteers at the site with the NT will get preference, but a ballot will be held for any remaining spaces. To sign up, please fill in the form here:

LiDAR Mapathon – Great Kingshill, 25th March, 10.45 – 12.45

We will be getting together as a group to spend some time on the Citizen portal mapping things, with the wider group, and myself, there to provide thoughts/opinions/ideas. Those of you who are already in my “Review panel” can also work on that. You will need to bring your laptop, charger, and a mouse always makes the work easier. I can provide a couple of spare laptops if needed. Tea and coffee will be provided.

 LiDAR Review Portal Training – Hazlemere, 3rd April, 11 – 3

The ‘Review Phase’ of the project is now underway, to turn the many citizen science records you’ve created into our neat ‘Master Database’. In order to help with this you will need to have some experience of working on the Citizen portal, and demonstrate a good understanding of the process of developing an interpretation of a feature in the LiDAR data, through decoding its morphology, its relationship with its landscape, and by bringing in other data sources. Don’t worry, we’re not expecting everyone to be LiDAR wizards, but if you feel you have got a bit of experience and a good feel for it, please do sign up!

You can continue to work on the LiDAR portal from the comfort of your own home.
