Mayor Sid looks forward to an eventful year

By Sid Abbott
It is a great pleasure to be appointed to the historic office of Town Mayor of Dunstable of which I am truly honoured and privileged to accept. I am also pleased my wife Heather will be supporting me as Mayoress.

I first came to Dunstable to visit my Granny as a child. I then moved with my parents to Luton and then to  Dunstable in 1973  where I met Heather who I married and have two daughters Katrina and Tracy who were born and attended school in Dunstable.  My working career has mainly been in engineering, health & safety and environmental management.

I am now actively retired and my main pursuits are as a Councillor, a volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Society, English Heritage at Wrest Park, Silsoe and Incredible Edible a community garden based in Katherine Drive who grow nutritious produce, free, for the local residents.

One of my first engagements was attending the Dunstable Town Council   “Around the World” at Priory Gardens. The event comprised music, culture and animals from different countries.  It was an outstanding success with more stalls and I believe the biggest attendance since it started some 3 years ago. There are plenty more free events this year so please visit our website www.dunstable.gov.uk for more information.

Dunstable is an evolving town with ongoing improvements, one being air quality with reduced nitrous oxide levels since the lorry restriction on the opening of the new M1 – A5 ( now A505)  link road and Woodside connections. Now only goods vehicles delivering to the local area can pass through. We are also a growing town with a population coming up to 40,000, with a diversity of cultures and nationalities, which will enhance the town going forward.

In my mayoral year, I will be holding several events for my chosen charities, which are the Alzheimer’s Society, Autism Bedfordshire, Signposts and Minds2gether.

I will be asking for your help in raising funds throughout the year to these deserving causes. For details of my charity events please contact my secretary michele.markus@dunstable.gov.uk or give her a call on 01582 891404

Planned events subject to confirmation are :-

Coffee Morning – Saturday 29 June, Grove House

Cricket Match – August

Golf Day – September

Bingo Night - November

Pudding Night – December

Race/ / Quiz Night - January/February

Mayors Dinner - March

Finally, the Mayoress and I are really looking forward to our Mayoral year and meeting residents, businesses, schools, charities and community groups of Dunstable who are the people who really matter in all aspects of a successful town.
